Deterministic vs probabilistic attribution
Attribution methods fall into two camps. Deterministic matches an install to the exact click via a shared identifier (like the Android Install Referrer's click id). Probabilistic infers the match from signals like IP and device type — a statistical guess.
Deterministic (preferred)
1:1 certainty. On Android, the Play Install Referrer carries the click id through install — no fingerprinting needed.
Probabilistic (fragile)
Fingerprinting is less accurate, increasingly restricted by platforms, and privacy-fraught. We avoid it.
